Dari has no soul and has been a robotic zombie for ten years. All of her friends have been taking care of her and she never realized it until her brother died, a boy kissed her, and she finally bonded with dad.

I'm not going to lie, the book was very slow in the beginning and confusing even with the breakdown in the front of the book. When Dari finally gets a voice, she doesn't bother to ask questions that the reader wants to know at the time. She was slow to ask questions, and when she finally does get the answers it was an overwhelming amount of information that still left me just as confused as the MC. I was fairly ticked off that she didn't follow through on why her soul was taken from her. Her temperament was extremely volatile or passive (no in between) and I had a hard time connecting with her. I didn't like her much.

This idea is extremely unique as are the villains and the setting, but I just wasn't grabbed by it. I've enjoyed the author's other books immensely that are just as unique in their telling as this one and I will continue to read her books.

House of Slide Hotblood eBook Juliann Whicker Reviews

The beginning was a little slow and somewhat confusing, after that it was an extremely addicting read. I definitely recommend this author.
I LOVED this book! I've been looking for a clean urban fantasy ever since I read Twilight. This book hits the spot! It's a story about a girl, Dariana, and how she develops from a soulless girl to a powerful and self realized young woman who finds love and self confidence as she takes on her brother's killer and finds her place in her complicated and somewhat psychologically screwy family. I loved the characters who range from a rough uncle that everyone calls Satan, who enjoys all things dangerous and violent, to her best friend who never fails to be there for her, however annoyingly perfect her hair is. The love interest is someone you can't quite trust, but can't help falling for along with Dariana. I can't wait for the second book in the series and recommend this for anyone looking for a well developed, character driven, obsessive read.
I felt a darkness I don't like as a reader in this book. But the author did a great job of setting and plot. I would have liked to see the characters build up a bit more. It was a bit confusing at times, but as I said before, plot-wise, it was a good read.
Move over werewolves and vampires and step into the world of the House of Slide. Juliann Whicker has created a whole new world of acceptance, rivalries and romance. Dariana must adjust to her new life and discover who she really is while going to school, crushing on the new guy and staying alive. This book was thoroughly enjoyable and very hard to put down.
What a pleasant surprise! I expected another clumsy YA paromanceanormal pulp. Instead, I found an engaging, well-paced story with a fresh flavor. Yes, technically it was both paranormal and a bit of a romance, but both of those aspects were secondary to the fact that this was a good story. There's excitement, drama, humor, and by golly, editing. I will pay for the sequel (trust me, that's rare).
I'll admit, I had a hard time getting into this book. The author is creating a whole new world of creatures that we are unfamiliar with, and only gave a brief description of each type of character at the outset. So at the beginning, I felt like I was wandering around lost as to what was going on. However, after I got further into the story, I was entranced. The conflict between the main characters kept me glued to the page. I could feel Dari's confusion as she learned to adjust to a whole new world of experiences long denied to her. It was a well crafted story with great characters. I am looking forward to the next installment.
After some initial confusion with getting all the houses and breeds of people right (hotbloods, cools, wilds and hollows), I found the book got right down to the story and sucked me in. I found I would pick it up and before I knew it, several hours had past and I didn't even realise as I was lost in the world Juliann created.

It took me a while to finish this one (well longer than a normal book of this length) and I think that was because I didn't want to miss any of it. The main characters, Dari and Lewis were brilliantly brought to life by Juliann, and really made me feel like I was there with them, experiencing everything they had to experience.

Juliann has captured another fan, and I long for the release of book #2 to continue on the rollercoaster ride that surrounds Dariana and her family.

Thanks so much Juliann for an enjoyable read!
