The Perfect Son edition by Barbara Claypole White Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is a great story that I wasn't sure I would like at first. In the end, it turned out that I loved everything about it. It is a story about the importance of family, about love, about conquering your fears, about acceptance, and so much more. As a person with my own often invisible disability that sometimes shows itself at odd times; and as a father whose son decided I was no longer needed in his life, as much as that hurt, I have chosen like the family in the book to try and get beyond and accept life for what it is and the gifts that come with it. The storyline about "you are not your diagnosis" has been one that I have often heard. Even if I didn't have my own storyline that I could see in the characters, I still would have loved the story for the way the different characters are treated, for the messages that come throughout the story, for the idea that people can change and overcome differences... if only you Believe!

This is a well written story, that everyone should read even if you have no disability. Perhaps it might make you think the next time you see someone who does, or even just someone who is a little different. If nothing else, it reminds all of us of the challenges seen and unseen that are in every individual and family and gives hope that you can overcome, and that life itself is a beautiful thing, even with all of its challenges, ups and downs, and twists and turns. It is what we make it, so make it a good one. Highly recommended.
I really enjoyed this book, another from my stockpile of Firsts that I am finally getting around to reading. It captured so well a family stumbling through a major upheaval in their lives and finding new normals and new connections. Felix is a difficult character to like at first, but I truly enjoyed reading his path to growth and change, and his reconnection with Ella and Harry. I felt the ending coming and I hoped that it wouldn't, but I also knew it had to end as it did. I see a lot of disconnect between parents and their teens who are suffering with some form of mental illness or something that makes them different. They don't always take a look at themselves. I feel like this would be a good book for parents and teens to read together to start conversations about their different perspectives of life.
I received this from the first read program some time ago and it had languished on my to read list for some time. Truthfully a lot of the titles from that program have been pretty forgettable. But this one was a game changer.
A disconnected father is forced into the role of active parent when his wife suffers a devastating heart attack. A teenager with Tourettes Syndrome and other complex neurological issues has to learn to cope differently with his new reality. And a mother struggles to find the energy necessary to live and stay relevant in her son's life.
On the surface this family seems doomed to failure. But the author patiently mines their secrets and fears, bringing them to the surface. Along with a secondary cast of rather quirky characters, the read watches as this family grows and finally thrives.
Thank you to the author and her determination to shed light and understanding on this subject in a sensitive highly readable manner. I look forward to reading more from this author.
One reader noted he was antsy with some of the longer descriptive parts and I understand that as I grew impatient too. But as the story unfolded every word would lend itself to building the character of the father. I bought this book as free under my unlimited and it wasn't till I started to read weeks later I realized it dealt with Tourettes. My son had Tourettes so it was a heartbreaking read for me at times. The writer hit the emotions, conflicts and trials dead on. It is so easy for the mom to take over this care and the father to not get totally involved in what he can't understand. You are so invested you have no energy left to do battle with bringing into the fold. So I understand how Ella dealt with the trials. The son comes across as he should--dealing with life as he can and eventually proving to himself that he is more than just TS. When mom gets ill and he has to at last come to grips with his father and his father has to come to grips with the raw facts of what is his son and put aside finally his own demons, it makes for a powerful read. It is a character book. It takes you on the road of parents dealing with the child gifted to them. A winding road full of great views and sharp curves. I thought the author captured all the emotions of the story. I rarely do book reviews but this book, that will not appeal to all readers, deserves to be applauded for embracing and succeeding in telling a story of a family dealing with a child who is a bit out of the box.
This is a great book that address the complex struggles of life occurances. This is a great book that truly allows you to grow compassionatly and with the characters. This is such a great book and really makes you finish feeling good. It's definitely a feel good book
