Miramont Castle, built in 1897 and mysteriously abandoned three years later, is home to many secrets. Only one person knows the truth Adrienne Beauvier, granddaughter of the Comte de Challembelles and cousin to the man who built the castle.

Clairvoyant from the time she could talk, Adrienne’s visions show her the secrets of those around her. When her visions begin to reveal dark mysteries of her own aristocratic French family, Adrienne is confronted by her formidable Aunt Marie, who is determined to keep the young woman silent at any cost. Marie wrenches Adrienne from her home in France and takes her to America, to Miramont Castle, where she keeps the girl isolated and imprisoned. Surrounded by eerie premonitions, Adrienne is locked in a life-or-death struggle to learn the truth and escape her torment.

Reminiscent of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca, this hauntingly atmospheric tale is inspired by historical research into the real-life Miramont Castle in Manitou Springs, Colorado.

I rarely actively dislike a book so severely I wonder why I am still reading it. Part of the fault here is mine, as I was expecting some form of ghost story or haunted house novel. This is no such thing, unless you grant a few tacked on pages at the end with being the main narrative drive of the story. Instead, this is a long, rambling history of a highly dysfunctional family. The writer shows sufficient mastery of language to draw me along for some time, but the abyssmal sense of plot and pace are dreadful. A couple of times during the book, I actually thought "I guess she felt she'd taken that as far as it will go, so this is going to be a different story now..." There is no payoff lurking at the end, no redemptive twist or upshot for having made it through. There is no clever tying up of the visions...no, all you get is a few things introduced after they've taken place - not mentioned when they happened, only mentioned later when needed to explain some plot point or other. This is one of those narratives about a life so bad that death is a release. It doesn't get better. Thankfully, it does eventually run out of pages.

Miramont Ghost edition by Elizabeth Hall Romance eBooks Reviews

I finished it. I have to finish a book, especially when I've invested so much time into it. I can't say the story wasn't interesting because the 1st half, maybe more, was, but it wasn't a ghost story by any stretch of the imagination - most of it was just about an extremely twisted family. Can we say dysfunctional? I kept putting it down and picking it up again. I was out of new books to read. I can enjoy a book the doesn't leave me a warm fuzzy. There's something to be said for horror and mystery. There wasn't a purpose to this book. The ending left me unfulfilled. I wanted satisfaction, something more from this book and it didn't deliver. I will not buy anything else from this author. It was a waste of hours of my time.
Of course it's a depressing story. That's how you create a ghost. Happy souls go to heaven. Evil souls go to hell. Tormented souls haunt the setting of their torture.

I visited Manitou Springs in 1979. It was shortly after the Historical Society took over and began the restoration. I thought it was an odd building that looked so out of place. The legend behind it made the castle even more strange. A Catholic priest with a 42 room castle? He left under mysterious circumstances? A ghost wandering the around the castle?

I love this story. It is a plausible explanation, based on some facts and a lot of fiction, for this strange out of place castle.
I thought I would really enjoy this book as what I thought it was going to be a ghost story and it is also compared to Rebecca, which is a favorite book of mine. Neither is very true.
I'll start off by saying that the author does a great job in engaging the reader that even when I had read 250 pages and was going "where the eff are the ghosts, and this book is nothing like Rebecca" I continued to read despite my ever growing pile of "to read" books.
The first say 150 pages of the book are really good. As I said the author writes very well, and the characters are interesting and well drawn out.
After that the plot gets a little fuzzy. SPOILER when Adrienne's aunt Marie takes her to America and sends a letter to the family saying she died on the crossing. I just don't conceive that anyone would be as hapless as Adrienne was. Even after Adrienne realizes what her cruel aunt Marie has in store for her she just kind of throws her hands up in the air. In fact that's pretty much all Adrienne ever does is throw her hands up in the air.
I really liked that when I looked up the history of the real Miramont Castle (just go on their website and it's a briefer read than the book) she sews in what really happened over a century ago into the plot of the book.
I guess I wanted creepy, and except for her really creepy Aunt Marie, and her pervert cousin Julien there isn't much creepy about the book.
I wanted ghosts, and other than a hint of that at the end nope no ghosts.
And the ending really leaves you wondering why you just read 325 pages to get to that.
I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, but I also wouldn't set anyone's copy on fire to prevent them from reading what will just disappoint them in the end.
