I really got sucked into this story line. Maybe because on some level, I can relate to Earl and his desperate searching journey. There was so much more to the man than what the world saw, except for a very few that took the time to get to know him and see beyond his scruffy exterior. There were a few times where the editing was rough, the comma usage causing herks and jerks where they shouldn't be, but these are easy to overlook as you get drawn in. If you've ever read and enjoyed Kurt Vonnegut, you won't be disappointed with this book. The story is told in the first person which really worked for me. Earl, as shown from the very start of the book, is a survivor. If there is a message in the story it is to never give up.Tags : Edge of Civilization [Jennifer Ott] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Great read.
A good read... easy to read and makes one think. The characters are great. You have to root for Earl to find his way in the world.
I'm surprised that I like it as much as I do. The story begins with a little confusion, but everything comes together together quite well, with some funny and some unexpected twists. A poignant yet feel-good story.
The sixties and Vietnam were s very tough time for me and like Earl I dropped out to the edge.
Your book broke my heart but helped heal it also.
This was an intensely strange book for me. I had difficulty putting it down because I had to know what was coming next. Kept my attention to the end. Thanks Ms Ott~!!
as I started to get into the story, I realized just how many of us could actually be Earl. Always looking towards the stars trying to find our way home, while spending so much time trying to forget the past and the hell we had lived in. Excellent read! Will keep an eye out for more stories from this author. Many thanks to a mutual friend who is also a writer for suggesting this!
Normally, I don't read books with any type of military theme, be it past or present.... With that being said, though, something about this book and blurb just kept coming to mind. Maybe it's because I realized from the blurb that it would be pretty epic, after all, it spanned a great many years. So I decided to buy it and see what I thought.
Edge of Civilization is a truly epic work of fiction. There were parts of it that really pulled at my heartstrings because life does pass us all by... And he spent all of those years alone. The book starts out with the way his life was... Present day where he's all alone. He's an old man now, but he makes the choice to rejoin civilization. And that choice it was leads him on his journey.
As the book moves along, we see scenes from his past, when he was a military man. And we start to see the events that shaped Earl.
Yes, he's a veteran. Yes, there are military scenes... But that is not the backbone of this book. The backbone goes much deeper than that. It's an inspiring read that will make you think, and it's definitely a keeper.
